Barley

  • Grain Type: Barley comes in two main varieties: two-row barley and six-row barley. Two-row barley has a plumper kernel and is preferred for malting (used in beer production). Six-row barley has a higher yield and is commonly used for animal feed and human consumption (like barley flour or barley flakes).
  • Moisture Content: Similar to other grains, barley for storage typically needs a moisture content of 12% or less to prevent spoilage.
  • Foreign Material: The presence of unwanted materials like weed seeds, insects, or other grains is undesirable. Levels are regulated and should be minimal.
  • Damaged Kernels: A certain percentage of kernels may be cracked or discolored. Acceptable levels are set based on the intended use (typically higher for animal feed than for human consumption).
